En Apuntes sobre mi vida pública (1892 – 1911) José Yves Limantour consigna las complicaciones y la grave enfermedad que, a principios de mayo de 1911, sufría Porfirio Díaz luego de que un dentista estadounidense le extrajera, de mala manera, una muela:
“[…] vino a crear una situación verdaderamente desesperada. En la cama, con una calentura elevadísima, teniendo toda la cabeza hinchada por una terrible infección, privado de alimentos y sin poder hablar más que por monosílabos, quedó de hecho inhabilitado durante muchos días para seguir atendiendo los apremiantes asuntos del momento”
De acuerdo con la Dra. Martha Kuri Díaz Gómez los momentos más agobiantes del malestar de Díaz fueron entre el 23 y el 25 de mayo de 1911. El 25 de mayo, cuando los dolores de la periostitis aguda eran insoportables, Díaz envió su carta de renuncia al Congreso.
Quizá no por casualidad el bisnieto del general es dentista de profesión.

Otra mala dentadura, que no terminó en renuncia, fue la de George Washington. El registro de sus sufrimientos buco-dentales puede leerse en sus diarios y cartas, digitalizados en The George Washington Papers at the Library of Congress, 1741-1799.
La entrada del 18 de enero de 1790 de su diario consigna su indisposición a causa de un dolor de dientes.
Y, hay montones de cartas dirigidas a John Baker y John Greenwood, sus dentistas personales:
Philadelphia, January 25, 1797.
The tooth that formerly went into the hole (that is now filled up) has been out many months; which was the cause for putting in the artificial one. If it was not sent with the rest, I know not what has become of it; nor is it material, as the one which supplies its place answers the purpose very well.
Not knowing whether you mean to make a new sett, or to repair the old, I must again caution you against adding any thing that will widen the bars on the sides, or extend them in front at bottom. They are already too wide, and too projecting for the parts they rest upon; which causes both upper, and under lip to bulge out, as if swelled. By filing these parts away (to remedy that evil) it has been one cause of the teeth giving way, having been weakened thereby.

Sir: What you sent me last, answer exceedingly well; and I send the first to be altered and made like them, if you can.
I will however just remark that the great error in those (now returned to you) is, that the upper teeth and bars do not fall back enough thus??? but stand more upright, so??? by which means the bar at (a) shoots beyond the gums and not only forces the lip out just under the nose but by not having its proper place to rest upon frets, and makes that part very sore.
P.S. I am willing and ready to pay what ever you may charge me.
Algunas versiones afirman que el hecho de que los espías británicos interceptaran una de las cartas dirigidas a su dentista, jugó un inesperado y afortunado papel en la decisiva batalla de Yorktown.
Todavía sobreviven algunos de los dientes postizos de Washington. Parte de una dentadura hecha por Greenwood es propiedad de la Academia de Medicina de Nueva York y, el único juego completo de la incómoda dentadura de marfil de hipopótamo y dientes de vaca, está en George Washington's Mount Vernon, en donde también, por solo 6.95 USD, puede comprarse un souvenir con la imagen del tortuoso artefacto.
